Why did you decide to write this book? I had been producing films and shorts. During the filming, I’d often talk to the crew about personal matters. When they asked me for advice on a problem they were dealing with, I’d give them my opinion. Eventually, enough of the crew wanted advice
that I thought I had something here. When a person who had sought advice returned several times for more, I decided to take the plunge. The feedback I’ve received has been tremendous. So, I think I made the right decision.
How long did it take you? About six months. I thought it would take maybe two months, but various projects and appearances pushed the completion date back. It was frustrating. However, living up to my original (and contractual) commitments took priority.
What kind of research did you conduct? The research was extensive. I studied the lives of successful people I wanted in the book. Then, I double-checked, cross-checked, and super-triple-checked the information. I thought I was done until the lawyers needed to review all my research. So, it was like doing it again. It felt like Groundhog Day. At times, it was maddening and partly responsible for pushing back the completion date.
What surprised you about writing or publishing your book? So many things. Like how I’d write a chapter on Monday, then not read it again until Friday when I’d realize it was terrible. I’d write it again and again. Plus, the grammatical errors I failed to catch. And finally, how my vision of the cover was not as good as a professional cover designer. Hiring professionals is the only way to go.
Why did you choose the Kindle Direct Publishing platform to publish your book? A. The professionals I hired advised me to use them. Still, I did my own research and came up with the same answer. KDP can get everything done and help you launch your book like a rocket. There were other good platforms, but Amazon’s KDP is really the MVP in a big league.
If you had to do it all over again, what would you change? I would have recognized the time commitment and distractions that get in the way. I would’ve given myself more grace instead of getting frustrated with the time schedule. Plus, I would’ve scheduled fewer personal appearances. Preparing for and traveling to those takes a lot of time.
What advice would you give to new writers out there? The gatekeeper is gone! No longer do you have to beg and plead for a publisher to accept your book and take two-plus years to publish it. KDP and other independent publishing platforms will take your material. If you wrote it on Monday and had a cover design ready, you could be selling books by Tuesday. Now, I don’t recommend that. In fact, I would urge you to slow down. Focus on quality. Not quantity and speed. You’ll be happier for longer.
Is there anything else you want to say? Yes. Many of the problems I discuss in the book are ones I have witnessed firsthand, either happening to a friend or, unfortunately, to me. I know this book will help people achieve success because I’ve seen readers who have been transformed. I hope and pray that you are one of those people who will greet me at the top.
